Hit by a Driver Who
Never Stopped?
Injury Law Made Personal®
A driver who takes off feels like the end of your case. Under Illinois law it is very often the start of one. Every auto policy sold in this state has to carry uninsured motorist coverage, and a hit-and-run driver who is never identified is treated as an uninsured driver — so your own policy is the one that pays. Ankin Law has fought for injured Illinois drivers, riders and pedestrians for over 35 years.

The Situation
A crosswalk, a right of way, and a car that keeps going. You are on the ground, the plate is gone, and the first thing everyone tells you is that there is nobody to sue. That is true and it does not matter, because the claim Illinois built for exactly this situation is not against the driver at all.
The Accident
What actually decides these cases is what got captured in the first few hours. The people on the corner who saw it. The doorbell camera three houses down that overwrites itself in a week. The police report number. Nobody collects that for you, and by the time you feel well enough to think about it, most of it is already gone.
The Solution
Ankin Law opens the uninsured motorist claim on your own policy, chases the footage and the witnesses while they still exist, and keeps working the identification in case the driver turns up. Your insurer is on the other side of this claim even though it is your insurer. Do not negotiate it alone.

What Illinois Law Says About Hit-and-Run
Every auto liability policy issued in Illinois must include uninsured motorist coverage. You have it whether or not you remember buying it
A hit-and-run driver who is never identified is treated as an uninsured driver, which is what puts your own policy in play
is the Illinois deadline for an injury lawsuit — but your policy may set a shorter one for notice and for demanding uninsured motorist arbitration
Which Policy Pays — and What You Can Recover
Your Own Policy
Uninsured motorist coverage follows the person, not the car. It reaches you as a pedestrian struck in a crosswalk, as a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, and on a bicycle — you do not have to have been driving your own car for it to apply.
A Resident Relative’s Policy
If you have no policy of your own, the uninsured motorist coverage of a relative you live with can still cover you. More than one policy can apply to the same crash, and finding the second one is often what changes the size of the recovery.
What You Can Recover
An uninsured motorist claim is measured the same way a case against the driver would be: medical bills, lost earnings, pain and suffering, disfigurement and loss of a normal life — up to the limits on the policies that apply.
Why Ankin Law Is the Right Call After a Hit-and-Run
The Evidence Has a Clock on It
Call the police and get a report number even if the car is long gone. Home and business cameras overwrite themselves in days, and the witnesses on that corner scatter within minutes. Preservation letters have to go out early.
Your Insurer Is Now the Opposing Party
The moment you make an uninsured motorist claim, the company you pay premiums to is the one deciding what your injury is worth. Recorded statements, medical authorizations and quick offers all come early and they are not neutral paperwork.
No Fee Unless You Win
You pay nothing to start and nothing unless Ankin Law recovers for you. The consultation is free and confidential, and there is no obligation to hire anyone. Howard Ankin has been doing this for over 40 years.
